What is Nystagmus?
Nystagmus is an eye condition that can be present at birth or develop later in life. It’s an eye condition that is characterised by rapid and involuntary eye movements that cause the eyes to flicker. The flicking of the eyes can often go in any direction, happen at any speed and size.

The most common symptom of nystagmus is involuntary eye movements. Other symptoms may include:
- Blurred vision
- Poor depth perception
- Difficulty tracking moving objects
- Dizziness
- Sensitivity to light
- Head tilting or turning of the head
- Problems with posture
Nystagmus can be caused by:
- Genetic disorders: Nystagmus can be inherited, or it can occur as part of a genetic condition such as albinism or Down syndrome.
- Medical Conditions: Such as brain injuries, inner ear disease, central nervous system diseases and as a side effect of some medications.
Nystagmus are diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam. The optometrist will assess the eye movements and discuss what has been observed during the consultation.
